Recently travelling to Mexico City, I was totally taken aback from my expectations of CDMX. As one of the most populated cities in the world, before going I had quite a bit of hesitation due to everyone saying how dangerous it was... needless to say I didn't feel unsafe AT ALL when I was there. Only having four days in the city we tried to see some of the highlights in and around Mexico City.
Day 1:
We arrived at our hotel the Hyatt Regency in Polanco at 7 a.m and were able to do early check-in. We ate some breakfast at the hotel and had a nap before we went out and about. We spent our afternoon, exploring the area of Polanco and did a bit of shopping. There are some really unique stores in the area. After walking around Polanco and having dinner we went to bed early after a long day of flying all night.
Day 2:
We travelled an hour by vehicle the next day out to Teotihuacán to see the pyramids. There are two large pyramids that you can climb (Pyramid of the Sun & Pyramid of the Moon). This was really cool to see, we did a private tour which was nice as we could take our time exploring. We got to choose our own time of departure of the tour and how long we wanted to spend at the site. Our tour was around 6 hours round including travel time. One recommendation I would suggest is to go early in the morning because it was very busy when we went with other tourists and as well to wear runners and comfortable clothes because you will do lots of climbing and walking!
Day 3: We decided to see more of the city and hoped in an uber down to the Zócalo. Once we were down there we saw the Hop-on-Hop-off busses and hopped on one of those tours. We wanted more of a relaxing day so we sat on the open-aired bus and saw all the different highlights of Mexico City. It was around 2 hours if you didn't get off the bus to see different attractions. I would highly recommend going on the hop-on-hop-off bus if you want to get a quick glimpse of Mexico City.
The Palace of the Arts
Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral
The Angel of Independence
Day 4:
Our last day in Mexico City, we went to Xochimilco. Xochimilco is a tourist attraction where you go on boats down a canal and other boats with mariachi bands and merchants come up to your boat and interact with you. It is a lot of fun. As it only took around an hour and a half, after that we took an uber to Castillo de Chapultec and toured the castle. The castle was very interesting, I would suggest getting an english speaking translator though because all of the information is in Spanish. I could have definitely spent more time exploring the castle as it was massive.
My overall take on Mexico City was that it was amazing, I would definitely return, as there is so much more to see and do. I felt completely safe there and would highly recommend staying in the area of Polanco. We took Uber every where and it was really convenient and inexpensive. The only issue we had was we received fake pesos from the bank machine at the Hyatt Regency hotel where we were staying so I would recommend going to an actual bank to take out money instead. Besides the fake money which is not a common occurrence it was an awesome trip and would recommend Mexico City to anyone! Will return again with no hesitations!
